Cordelia Wikarski-Miedel Bio

Cordelia Wikarski-Miedel is currently the Northwest-Artist-Teacher in residence at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, and has been since 1983. In addition to cello instruction at the University of Puget Sound, she has offered master classes, clinics, coaching and performances throughout the Northwest. Previously, she held the position of cello-professor at the University of Puget Sound from 1979-1983. Prior to that Wikarski-Miedel held the position of cello-professor at the Hochschule fur Musik "Hanns Eisler" in East-Berlin, Germany from 1973-1976.

In addition to her teachings, Wikarski-Miedel has toured the world as a concert cellist. She has been a featured soloist with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra playing such works as the Shostakovich Cello Concerto #2, William Schumann's "Song of Orpheus" and the Vivaldi Double-Concerto. In Europe she has performed with orchestras and as a recitalist in Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Russia, Poland, Rumania, Austria, West-Germany, East-Germany, Iraq, and India. She has also made recording and television appearances in Berlin, East-Germany, and was a member of the contemporary ensemble serving the Maxim Gorki Theater in East-Berlin (1961-1971).

Cordelia Wikarski-Miedel graduated in 1961 with her masters degree from the "Hochschule fur Musik" Berlin (West). And she has studied with noted pedagogues, Maurice Gendron and August Eichhorn until 1967. She has won first prize the International Competition, Duo Cello-Piano in Munich, 1958 and won prizes at the Pablo Casals Competition in Budapest, 1963 and the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, 1966. Wikarski-Miedel was the recipient of the coveted Felix Mendelssohn Award of East-Germany, 1966.
