CELLO The U.S. Army Strings Resume/Tape deadline: March 3, 2003 The United States Army Band (Pershing's Own), announces an opening for Cello with the Army's premier musical organization, located 10 minutes from downtown Washington, D.C. All applicants must demonstrate excellent sight-reading skills as well as extensive orchestral experience, solo ability and musical versatility in various symphonic and commercial settings. Regular duties will include performance with The Army Strolling Strings, Army Orchestra, and other smaller ensembles including string quartets and trios. Applicants will be expected to meet all standards required to enlist in the Armed Forces to include a physical examination. Maximum age is 34. An extensive background investigation will be conducted on the accepted candidate to ensure suitability for White House support duties. Please submit a resume and a cassette tape or CD with examples of technical and musical proficiency in a variety of musical styles. About the U.S. Army Cello Section In addition to performing as a "strolling strings " group, a large part of our work lies in providing music for events as members of string quartets, trios, and other smaller ensembles, as well as performing orchestra and chamber music concerts. Each one of our cellists has had the opportunity to perform as soloists with the orchestra. The Strings as a whole consists of graduates from some of the nations finest music schools, including Indiana University, Oberlin Conservatory, Eastman School of Music, Cleveland Institute, Mannes College, Cinncinnatti Conservatory, Michigan State, and Juilliard. SFC John Gockel - BM Oberlin Conservatory. Studied with Andor Toth, Jr., Nella Hunkins, Andrew VonSchill. Prior to Army Service was member of Florida Symphony, Jacksonville Symphony, Jacksonville Symphony String Quartet, Brockport Symphony, American Chamber Orchestra (also while in Army) and performed with the Savannah Symphony. Also attended Taos School of Music and Eastern Music Festival. Has performed as soloist at Concordia College and Oberlin Conservatory Orchestra. Is currently principal cellist, personnel mgr., and contractor of National Christian Choir Chamber Orchestra, and teaches at Columbia Institute of Fine Arts. SFC Charlotte Roberts -BMA Virginia Commonwealth University and attended East Carolina University. Studied with Frantisek Smetana, Stephen Kates, and David Hardy. Member of Richmond Symphony for 20 years and was also a member of the Virginia Opera and Virginia Symphony for several years. Performed as Principal cellist for both the AIMS Festival in Graz, Austria and Spoleto Festival in Charleston S.C. and Italy. Served as adjunct professor at Mary Washington College 1982-1995 and has recorded with National Chamber Players on the Klavier Label. Currently is also Principal cellist of Arlington Symphony. SSG Sam Swift - BM Michigan State, MA Univ. of Maryland. Also attended Indiana Univ. and N. Illinois Univ. Studied with David Sawyer, Marc Johnson, Raya Garbousova, Steve Doane, and Gary Hoffman. Lecturer at University of Virginia 1991-3. Prior to Army service performed with Detroit and Alabama Symphonies, and coached chamber music at Bowdoin and Meadowmount Festivals. Has attended several music festivals including Banff, Ravinia, and Blossom, and was a fellowship winner at Tanglewood. Appeared as soloist with Calgary Philharmonic and Charlottsville Symphony. Has also substituted as adjunct cello professor at Shenandoah Conservatory.
